Steve Cooper | Gibbs-White loan will benefit everyone

26th August

Steve Cooper believes new loan star Morgan Gibbs-White can make a big impact at Swansea City following his switch from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The midfielder sealed his move to the Liberty on Tuesday, and will spend the rest of the campaign in SA1 after joining fellow new recruits Freddie Woodman and Korey Smith in Cooper’s squad.

Gibbs-White links up again with Cooper, having played a starring role under him during England’s success at the Under-17 World Cup in 2017.

And the Swans boss was delighted with the 20-year-old’s decision to join his squad.

“Morgan’s a good player, there’s no doubt about that. He can make a big impact,” said Cooper.

“Morgan is a very positive player. He’s all action – he likes to be on the ball as much as he can and wants to make an impact going forward.

“He’s a powerful player who has the ability to drive and pass from midfield areas along with joining attacks, and he’s willing to work hard.

“I have experience of working with him before, and that’s a little help in knowing the player and person.

“But it’s clear to see that Morgan is a player with a lot of talent and potential. You don’t need to have worked with him to realise that because it’s clear when you see him play.”

Gibbs-White featured 16 times for Wolves last season – seven times in the Premier League along with seven appearances in the Europa League as Nuno Espirito Santo’s team reached the quarter-finals before being knocked out by eventual winners Sevilla.

He also has experience of the Championship, having enjoyed promotion with Wolves in 2018 after they won the division.

And Cooper believes those experiences can benefit the Swans this term.

“He’s been part of a Wolves team that has had a lot of success and made a lot of progress over the last few years,” added Cooper.

“Being part of that winning culture is a very positive thing, and hopefully he can transfer that experience here.

“We are very selective about the players we bring in – a lot of work goes into the due diligence.

“What’s really important is that every player that comes here, whether it’s on loan or on a permanent move, is that they buy into our beliefs and work for the greater good of our club.

“I’m sure he would have had other options, but as soon as we spoke to Wolves and Morgan it seemed like a really good fit.

“This is a loan move which will really benefit everyone.”
