Steve Cooper has challenged Swansea City to back up victory over Sheffield Wednesday by collecting another three points towards their play-off effort at Birmingham in midweek.

The Swans kept themselves in the hunt for a top-six finish in the Championship thanks to a 2-1 victory over the Owls, courtesy of goals from Rhian Brewster and Andre Ayew.

It leaves Cooper’s side four points off the play-offs with just five games remaining in the 2019-20 season.

They next play on Wednesday when they travel to face Birmingham City and, having been frustrated at his side missing out on the chance to build on the recent win at Middlesbrough, the head coach is in no mood to waste the opportunity to build momentum at such a crucial stage of the season.

“There is not long to go now, but I think a lot will happen in the games that are left,” said Cooper.

“But we need to focus on Birmingham, we have to look after ourselves first and foremost.

“We have got to back this up with another win because that is so important. We have to be really committed to that. We had the chance after Middlesbrough and did not back it up.

“If we can do that then we will see where it takes us, but that has to be the focus to get to Birmingham and do our best to win the game.”
