The Swans completed their pre-season preparations with an impressive 4-0 victory over Sampdoria on this day in 2017.

Paul Clement’s side enjoyed a comfortable victory over their Italian opponents at the Liberty Stadium.

The Swans made a lively start and took the lead in the 40th minute when Tom Carroll whipped in a free-kick from the left and Leroy Fer leapt highest to head home.

Leon Britton nearly doubled the lead two minutes later, but his shot flew over the bar.

The second half started in bizarre fashion as, virtually from the kick-off, Ricky Alvarez’s backpass proved too strong for goalkeeper Andrea Tozzo, and the ball rolled into an empty net for an own goal.

The Swans made it 3-0 in the 65th minute when Tammy Abraham met a Carroll cross that was parried into his path by Tozzo, with the striker bundling the ball home from close range.

The goals kept coming as Carroll delivered a corner that found Federico Fernandez completely unmarked, and the central defender headed home with 76 minutes on the clock.

Exactly a year earlier, the Swans completed the signing of Spanish World Cup winner Fernando Llorente from Sevilla.

The 6ft 4in striker scored 15 goals in 35 appearances in SA1 before joining Tottenham Hotspur in August 2017.
