Monk delighted with crucial win

19th April

Garry Monk was delighted with a crucial three points after his side snatched a 2-1 victory over Newcastle at St. James' Park.

An injury time penalty from Wilfried Bony saw the Swans grab all three points after the Ivory Coast international scored a 45th minute equaliser to cancel out Shola Ameobi's 23rd minute opener.

Despite a bright start by Monk's side, the hosts took the lead midway through the first period when Ameobi turned inside the box before firing past Michel Vorm.

But deep into stoppage time of the first-half, Bony was on hand to power home a trademark header from Ben Davies' in-swinging corner to take the two sides in to half-time at one-a-piece.

And after having several chances to complete the comeback, the Swans were awarded a penalty in the second minute of added time when Marvin Emnes was scythed down inside the penalty area.

Despite the high-pressure situation, Bony kept cool to place his spot-kick into the right-hand top corner, securing all three points for the visitors.

The victory means the Swans move up to 13th place in the Barclays Premier League table, six points clear of the relegation zone with three games to play.

And Monk felt his side got what they deserved from a difficult game.

"I think we deserved it," said Monk. "We started well for the first 20 minutes, but they got the goal and it affected us a little bit.

"After that, Bony levelled at the right moment before half-time.

"At half-time, I felt that we needed to pass the ball better and up the intensity, and I believe we did that in the second-half.

"It was always going to be difficult, but then we were awarded a stonewall penalty in the last minute, which was a just reward for us in the end.

"Of course it was a relief to get the three points, but we have nine more points to play for and we want those nine points.

"We're not happy with the position we are in and in how inconsistent we have been this season.

"It's important in the final three games we finish strong and send a message out ahead of next season.

"Our squad is together, and I think it's clear to see with that fighting performance."

And the Swans boss was also keen to praise Bony after the striker's two goals this afternoon took him to 22 for the season.

"Bony has been great," Monk added. "He has stepped up to the plate in his first season here.

"He's a massive character and he works so hard every day.

"He has goals, but he's also a handful for defenders when he's not scoring. He deserves a lot of credit because he's been brilliant for us."
