Report: Swans U18s 2 Chesterfield U18s 0

15th December

Oli Cooper and Shaq Wynter-Coles were on target as Swansea City Under-18s beat Chesterfield 2-0 in the FA Youth Cup at Landore.

Cooper opened the scoring in the 32nd minute while substitute Wynter-Coles secured the victory in the dying minutes as the young Swans progressed to the fourth round of the competition, where they will play either Huddersfield Town or Fulham.

The young Swans made a positive start to the contest but were almost caught out on the counter-attack inside the opening 10 minutes, only for Ben Cabango to recover and make a vital interception that prevented Luke Rawson from bearing down on goal.

However, the hosts’ superiority began to show with Mason Jones-Thomas and Matthew Roberts going close, while Brandon Cooper and Matthew Blake were not too far away with long-range efforts.

The pressure finally told in the 32nd minute when Chesterfield failed to cut out a diagonal crossfield ball, and Oli Cooper was on hand to slide home a perfectly weighted cutback by Jones-Thomas.

The young Swans continued to threaten after the break with Brandon Cooper heading just over from a corner, but the lacking of a clinical edge in the final third meant they were precariously holding on to their single-goal advantage.

But their opponents offered little threat at the other end, with their best chance seeing Ify Ofoegbu’s powerful effort draw a fine save out of Alex Lang.

And the hosts put the tie to bed with a minute remaining, as Wynter-Coles latched onto Marc Walsh’s cutback before squeezing the ball past Brad Jones.
