Past meetings: Manchester City v Swans

18th April
First team

As the Swans get set to face Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday (4.30pm), we look back at some previous encounters between the clubs.

Here we recall past meetings in the Premier League and the old Division Two.

Manchester City 2 Swans 1

Premier League – February 5, 2017

The Swans were cruelly denied what would have been a hugely creditable draw at the Etihad Stadium last season.

Gabriel Jesus gave Manchester City a lead they deserved after a dominant first-half performance.

The Swans battled back after the break and levelled nine minutes from time when Gylfi Sigurdsson steered the ball home after being found by Luciano Narsingh.

But there was heartbreak for the Swans when Jesus scored his second goal in stoppage time, with boss Paul Clement insisting a free-kick in the lead-up to the goal should not have been awarded – and was then taken from the wrong place.

Manchester City 4 Swans 0

Premier League – August 15, 2011

The Swans were thrown in at the deep end following their promotion from the Championship as they made the trip to Manchester City on the opening day of the season.

Brendan Rodgers’s team finished up well beaten, but not before they had produced a performance which gave the first signs that they could compete in the top flight.

It took Roberto Mancini’s star-studded team 57 minutes to break the Swans down, with Edin Dzeko opening the scoring.

Debutant Sergio Aguero then scored either side of a David Silva strike, yet the Swans left the Etihad with heads held high.

Division Two – March 14, 1951

In 16 visits to Manchester City – the Etihad Stadium and previously Maine Road – the Swans have won just once.

That triumph came in 1951, when Billy McCandless’ team were battling against relegation from the old Second Division.

They delivered a crucial win in Manchester – only their second away from home all season – thanks to goals from Dai Thomas (above) and Ron Turnbull, who had only recently left Maine Road to sign for the Swans.

It proved to be a key victory in what ultimately was a successful survival fight.

Division Two – October 19, 1946

The Swans have only ever drawn one game at Manchester City down the decades, and that was in a Second Division clash in 1946.

The Welsh club were tipped for a heavy defeat, yet they were unfortunate not to win after producing a fine performance.

Northern Ireland international Norman Lockhart scored the Swans’ goal, and they could have had a few more but for the heroics of Frank Swift (above).

The Manchester City keeper, an England international, died in the Munich air disaster after taking up journalism following his retirement from playing.
