Community Trust Moving Up

Swansea City AFC Community Trust are merging their Premier League Primary Stars and Inspires programmes to help ease the transition from primary to secondary education.

The transition days will be taking place at Llangatwg Community School, Ysgol Cwm Brombil and Ysgol Bro Dinefwr, and will use fun physical and classroom activities to make the leap from primary to secondary education that little bit easier.

The project aims to use the power and accessibility of football to encourage pupils to think about the next chapter in their lives. With workshops such as ‘Transfer Window’, ‘Confidence Coach’, ‘Squad Goals’ and more, pupils will use real life examples from professional football to relate to their own transition.

Graham Smith, secondary education lead at the Community Trust, believes the Moving Up Project will be invaluable to both pupils and teachers in the wake of the disruption caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

"COVID-19 has caused huge disruption to the education of our young people, but perhaps most acutely for those pupils moving up to secondary school this September," he said.

"Usually they would have fantastic opportunities to visit their new schools and meet their new teachers and classmates during their final year of primary school, but this year that has not been possible.

"Working with our partner schools, we are looking to support their transition to secondary education by running some fun and inspirational workshops and activities that will fill pupils with confidence and excitement for the big move up to comprehensive school."

Likewise, Curtis Grant, primary education lead at the Trust, has highlighted the importance of these workshops.

"We have had a keen interest in supporting pupils through the difficulties of transition to secondary school for a long time, and have been working on several ways that we can ease the worries that pupil face during this new chapter in their life," he said.

"Whilst this has never been an easy process for pupils, we recognise that this year will be more difficult than others with the amount of opportunities they have missed out on.

"We are extremely excited about the launch of the Moving Up project and we hope lots of pupils benefit from attending."

The Community Trust will be taking strict precautions to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, as per advice from the Welsh Government.

Social distancing will be adhered to throughout the sessions, and all equipment will be regularly sanitised, with hand sanitisers also being provided at each station.
