Swans club captain Leon Britton visited Pontybrenin Primary School to mark the launch of Premier League Primary Stars - the Premier League’s new national curriculum-linked education programme.

After renaming the school after Britton for the day, the midfielder joined pupils and teachers for a Premier League Primary Stars maths lesson before launching the Premier League Primary Stars Kit and Equipment scheme which donates valuable items to the school.

Using the appeal of football and sport to connect and inspire, Premier League Primary Stars aims to develop skills and ambition both on and off the sports field with resources for girls and boys aged 5-11 years old. Providing curriculum-linked Key Stage 1 and 2 classroom resources for PE, maths, english and enterprise, Primary Stars also helps to engage with junior Jacks and nurture their development in the classroom and in the playground.

The scheme will allow teachers the opportunity to get their hands on a full team kit or a range of useful equipment that can be used for different subject areas.

“Having a school named after you is something you never dream of,” said Britton. “It’s great that the Premier League is investing money into local communities, whether it’s in Swansea or throughout the UK.

"I think it’s important to let fans see that. That it’s not just going into the football clubs but also into the surrounding communities and it’s having an effect on them and doing positive things.”

Britton's visit went down well with both pupils and teachers.

"It’s been brilliant having Leon at the school today,” said Olivia, a pupil at the school. “He’s been showing us new skills and he’s helped us with our work in class and helped us with our maths problems.”

Richard Scudamore, Executive Chairman, Premier League added: “Premier League Primary Stars uses the power and popularity of football to inspire children to enjoy english, maths and a range of other subjects.

"Our clubs are already doing great work in this area and it is fantastic to see players visiting local schools to support the programme and encourage learning.”

The football kit package includes: 14 football shirts, 1 goalkeeper shirt, 15 pairs of shorts and 15 pairs of socks.

The equipment package includes: a roller bag, bibs, training balls, pop-up goals, a whistle, a ball pump, a captain's armband, hoops, cones, bean bags, giant dice and floor markers.

The Premier League Primary Stars Kit and Equipment scheme is supported by Nike and delivered by the Football Foundation.
